Transforming Forrest Place

Re-establishing Forrest Place as the premier civic space within the City was the objective behind the planned transformation of Forrest Place by the City of Perth.

To do this a complete redevelopment was required replacing the various levels, separated by stairs that existed between Murray Street Mall forming the southern perimeter of Forrest Place with a continuous surface that gently sloped across Wellington Street to Perth Station on the north. This in effect opened up Forrest Place and allowed other developments to occur such as the positioning of a permanent stage and shade structure plus new landscaping and water features.

Australian granite was selected for the paving and kerbing of this extensive area. Nearly 9000m2 of paving using a combination of Austral Juperana and Balmoral Green in 0mm thickness was used for this work with a total of 1200 lm of Austral Black Granite kerbing to redefine the Wellington Street roadway.

Paving was generally 800x400with some 100x100 sets whilst the kerbing was 300x300 in both straight and curved sections also with provision for pedestrian crossings. Stage 2 of the works which involves all the relevelling of the north section of Forrest Place is nearing completion and will be followed by Stage3A later this year involving a continuation of the paving plus a significant water feature in the central area of Forrest Place in turn to be followed by the remaining section covering the intersection of Forrest Place and Murray St Mall. Once completed Forrest Place will have been transformed into a vibrant space within the fabric of what is a rapidly changing City.
